Ten computer viruses that changed the world
Brain (1986)
It's almost 25 years since the first PC computer virus left users looking at corrupted floppies, lost work and perplexing messages. In that time, the state of the art in automated malfeasance has progressed to the point that it's part of the armory of international geopolitics. Stuxnet, while still mysterious, left nobody in any doubt that viruses and worms can be used in the highest-stake game there is.
Along the way, hundreds of millions of infections have taken place, billions of dollars have been lost in productivity and broken systems, and the anti-malware industry has grown to become a significant player in the IT market. It's not over yet: perhaps it never will be, but the history of malware is a fascinating insight into the technology and culture of the digital world.
1. Brain (1986)
It sounded like science fiction, but it was all too real. Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi, a pair of software programmers from Pakistan, became annoyed at people duplicating their products and created what was supposed to be a kill switch for illicit copies. But the design was flawed; the anti-copy software could duplicate itself — and did.
iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4: Jailbreak Tethered, no Unlock
iPhone 4, the good and the bad, really things have been so uncertain with this iDevice. Recently I bought an iPhone 4, running iOS 4.0 Jailbroken and Unlocked.
To hard reset the phone, complete reset option was used from the settings menu. Misery, on reboot, the phone got stuck on the Apple logo and wouldn't go ahead. I connected to the PC, and kept it as is, since iTunes said you need to restore it. Someone pressed the restore button there while I was away. Voila! It got updated to the latest brand new iOS 4.2.1, how unfortunate. Then was the time for me to look up iPhone news about Jailbreak and Unlock for iOS 4.2.1 and BaseBand 3.10.01.
Tethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1
The iPhone dev blog introduced me to the 'Tethered' Jailbreak, since my iPhone wasn't even 'hacktivated', I had to go for any Jailbreak, and Tethered was fine for then. I downloaded the Jailbreak tool from iPhoneDownloadBlog Downloads section, and also the large iOS firmware files, really bulky, Windows Mobile OS fits in half the size.
Exploring WEP encrypted Wireless Networks
We will use a Linux distro called the BackTrack, which features various Network Audit tools.
You can crack only WEP protected networks and you need lot of patience. More and more people have started to use WPA technology to protect their networks and it comes by default from the router manufacturers nowadays.
You need a PC with a router capable of sniffing packets, a BackTrack OS dvd and few command line (Terminal) basics.
Algorithm for iPhone Jailbreak
Downgrade to 4.0.1 to be able to jailbreak using "jailbreakme.com"
- Most of the time the file will be zipped (I have given instructions later in this article on how to change a .zip file to an .ipsw easily)
- When TinyUmbrella opens and detects your device it will automatically see that you are on 4.0.2 or which ever firmware that you are using
- Check the box that says Advanced Options
- Leave the ECID box alone and in the Device/Version box choose from the list the device that you are using as well as the firmware that you want to be on
- If the request from box does not say Cydia, choose cydia there
HTC Touch Diamond2 Androided!
The video below shows Android's Froyo running on a Windows Mobile - HTC Diamond2 (topaz). It is almost stable with most features working.
Experience is close to HTC Hero's. Also there are builds which include the HTC Sense for Android.
For information on how to get your device running Android, head over to xda developers forum. Not only Diamond2, there are other HTC devices too which can run Android. What is unlikely is that the battery power management is still poor, sometimes the battery is full although its low, and vice versa. The camera controller crashes indefinitely, but everything else is pure Android!
Mac OS X on Intel, AMD x86 PCs
Since Apple switched to Intel hardware, there have been uncountable instances of Apple's Mac OS X running on non-Apple branded PCs, right from the older Mac OS X Tiger to the most recent Snow Leopard. While few comments show this act as illegal, while others consider it legal given that you possess a license of the Mac OS X software.
I decided to give this a try, since anything which is restricted is fun trying out!
